Rapid Impact Compaction/Rapid Dynamic Compaction (RIC/RDC) is a technique like Dynamic Compaction and can be used to increase the bearing capacity of weak soils through controlled impact energy being transmitted through a pad.

RIC/RDC is effective for compaction of upper layers of ground typically up to 5- 7m depth and in some cases up to 9m deep depending on soil properties. A weight of 5 to 16 tons is lifted using a hydraulic jack and then allowed to fall onto a special pad assembly that remains in contact with the ground throughout this process. The rate of impact is 30 to 60 blows per minute which results in immense energy transfer to the ground in a very rapid manner.

Using this technique, it is possible to compact most granular fills/soils, the best results being achieved when the soil comprises of well-graded particle sizes with less than 15% fine content. This method can be used for in-situ soils or for compaction of fills.
